KAREN ELSON AND LEITH CLARK: A FASHIONABLE COMBINATION

LEITH ON KAREN

Imagine that you’re off to stay at some random house party for the week, and everybody else going are great friends. Scary, right? That’s not how it panned out for stylist Leith Clark and Karen Elson, who met when Leith turned up to make ‘a sort of film’ at Karen’s house in Nashville, along with a couple of other creative types.

Oddly, Leith wasn’t nervous. If anything, she was excited to meet people who were “on her planet creatively”. And, as it transpired, Karen and she had more in common than just an artistic sensibility. Karen proved to be such a welcoming and warm host, that there was nowhere Leith wasn’t allowed to go (literally and metaphorically) when making her film, and the pair just clicked.

And now, 11 years later, Karen and Leith have been all over the world together – weird cities for work, Glastonbury for fun, and even, it seems, back in time. Or at least that’s the effect Karen has on Leith when she’s around, “like the internet shouldn’t exist, and we should just be listening to records.”

How does Leith sum up Karen? “She is this charming, elegant human being who’s from another era.” Karen shares that vintage-yet-contemporary character of Leith’s favourite fragrance, Red Roses. “With its honeyed scent of tangled rose trees in an English garden, it makes me think of poetry and sunshine,” she says.

KAREN ON LEITH
“I never need to do it again,” says model and singer-songwriter Karen Elson about Glastonbury. Not because she hated it, she didn’t. It’s just that she and Leith Clark “did it absolutely right” the time they went together in 2013. Perhaps that’s because Leith has this “quirky imagination that just permeates into everything and makes it magical,” Karen says. “A lot more magical than maybe it should be. Watching the Rolling Stones together from the side of the stage is a memory that will live in my heart forever.”

Because that’s what Karen loves so much – the added Leith touch. The fact that her friend “exudes a sense of wonder in a world where people can take themselves so seriously.” That’s Leith’s charm, Karen adds, and it makes her pal “just fit in instantly” with whoever she finds herself with.

These two even have a shared taste in fragrances as Jo Malone London Girl Karen is also a Red Roses devotee. “I combine it with Blackberry & Bay for added juice and nostalgia,” she says. “The result is a fruity, flowery, quirky and very English combination. A bit like Leith and me!”
