The Scents of Occasion

Here at Jo Malone London, we believe that effortless is the pinnacle of elegance. It’s that compliment only awarded when, knowing with unwavering certainty, that the person in question has nailed it, all the while making it look easy. And when it comes to describing Australian style maven Sara Donaldson and Rich Crampton’s wedding, quite frankly only effortless will do. After all, when the bride’s pre-nuptial prep involves swimming in the ocean, you know there’s a certain cool factor surrounding the whole day.

As the mastermind behind fashion blog Harper and Harley, Sara was undoubtedly going to ensure her big day was a lesson in style and sophistication. The aisle lined with palm trees, the marquee filled with fairy lights, and an infectious feeling of joy – tick. The day played out to reflect Sara’s signature sartorial look, minimalist with an unexpected edge. Cue all-white floral arrangements of orchids juxtaposed with exotic king protea flowers. A bridal gown that channelled couture over traditional, and a black-tie dress code, because according to Sara, ‘there aren’t many occasions to get dressed up for anymore. I also liked the contrast between the country setting and the black suits. Elegant yet relaxed.’

The day itself was full of personal touches, from the setting (Rich’s family’s macadamia farm just outside of Byron Bay, New South Wales) to the outdoor ceremony. ‘My mother-in-law spent months planting white bulbs and flowers in the garden so that they would be in bloom on our wedding day. It was the most beautiful gift.’ Sara recalls the day as a dream, and with details this thoughtful we tend to agree.

Scent was integral to Sara’s wedding plans. ‘Life can be so busy and, on such a special day, I wanted to remember every aspect. Scent allowed me to do that.’ Creating her own fragrance combination to pull the day together was of the utmost importance. As always, her eye was firmly on the details, and she opted to use Lino Nel Vento Scent Surround Linen Spray to scent the table linen for the wedding breakfast. ‘It was a beautiful idea, as guests get an unexpected subtle hint of fragrance.’ And for scenting the main spaces, she paired English Pear & Freesia Home Candles with Wood Sage & Sea Salt Candles. ‘We wanted to bring out the natural beauty of the property and the ocean nearby, and our scent choices brought the occasion to life.’

When it came to the bride and groom, it was English Oak & Hazelnut Cologne for Rich, and English Pear & Freesia Cologne for Sara, who says that every time she uses the scent she’s back at her wedding, in a daze of romance. ‘It’s become my go-to finishing touch; I feel naked without it.’
